Sonic Tomography Investigations

When a visual tree assessment suggests the need for a deeper examination, we are quickly able to ‘see’ into the tree and determine the extent of decay within the stem. Trees that look damaged on the outside may not have any meaningful loss of mechanical strength that compromises its safety factor and, therefore, can be retained. Conversely, a seemingly healthy tree that is not displaying any advanced signs of decline may have internal issues that require further remedial work.

The ARBOTOM® Tree Tomograph is a cutting-edge tool used for assessing tree risk and evaluating wood quality. It uses a novel, non-invasive impulse tomography unit that produces an internal view of the condition of trees and round wood. With ARBOTOM®, hidden decay, invisible cavities, and cracks are detected using sound impulses, providing a comprehensive view of the tree's internal structure.

In addition to stem analysis, we can also examine a tree's roots with the Arboradix® system. This technology maps the main rooting area and identifies root locations and conditions, even beneath concrete surfaces.

Method

Sonic Tomography uses sound waves that travel through healthy wood faster than through decayed wood. Sensors around the tree measure the time it takes an induced impulse to travel through the wood and reach the other sensors. The collected data is simultaneously sent to a computer which calculates any loss in strength and turns the relative velocity of the sound waves into a coloured image (tomograph) of the tree’s cross-section. This image indicates any hollows and area of degradation.

By utilizing these advanced tools, we can make informed decisions about tree preservation and necessary interventions, ensuring both safety and longevity of the tree.

Properties and advantages

  • Precise localisation of defects in trees and round wood

  • Tree-friendly because its quasi non-destructive

  • Easy-to-understand tomography presentation of the measured results

  • Exact damage assessment

  • Quick evaluation directly on location

  • Two- or three-dimensional measurements of the internal condition of trees

  • Detection of the weakest zones and areas with the lowest residual wall thickness using a 16-sensor array
